If you feel confident paddling on placid water, but would like to embark on more challenging journeys, including rapid rivers or open water, this course is for you.

Man paddling open canoe on moving water, River Wye Paddling Open Canoe on Afon Gwy - River Wye

We will cover strategies for paddling open canoes on rapid and open water, and alternative methods of canoe propulsion; lining, tracking and poling. We will discuss various methods of packing and stowing your expedition equipment, and you will be given the opportunity to be involved in trip planning and navigation.

For these courses, you need to be able to control a canoe or kayak on placid water and be comfortable in a capsize situation. If you do not have prior experience, one of our Introduction to Canoeing courses would be an ideal preparation for this course. The course is available to doubles or solo canoe paddlers.
