'Paddlesport' - Canoeing and Kayaking

Canoeing for the Terrified - Placid Water

Have you ever thought of canoeing but been put off because...

You need to do a capsize drill...

No, you don't!

Capsize drills are necessary for closed-cockpit kayaks, but there are plenty of alternatives. Open cockpit kayaks and open canoes can be safely paddled without first practising the capsize drill.

You can get stuck in the canoe underwater...

This is a fear of many people who have tried using kayaks with small cockpits, or who have heard 'horror stories' from those who have done so in the past.

In an open cockpit kayak, or open canoe, if the boat tips over, you will fall safely out, supported by your buoyancy aid. You may not even get your hair wet!

You get wet and cold...

Not necessarily!

Using stable canoes and kayaks, there is no reason to fall out. And who says you have to go in cold weather? Placid Water is available all year round.

You need to paddle white-water if you want to progress in the sport...

White-water can be great fun, but there are plenty of alternative ways to enjoy paddlesport. Touring on Placid Water, Racing, Dragon Boating, Bell Boating, Canoe Sailing... You could enjoy a lifetime of varied paddling without ever going near white-water.

It's for teenage boys...

It's for EVERYONE!

Male or female, young or old, anyone can enjoy canoeing or kayaking. And it's an ideal way for families to spend an outdoor holiday together.

You need a lot of specialist equipment...

Not to get started. You can try the sport on one of our courses or holidays, where all equipment is supplied. If you want to continue, it helps to have a canoe/kayak, paddle and buoyancy aid, but you can often find a local canoe club who will let beginners borrow these. As for clothing, all you need for placid water canoeing is something light, comfortable and appropriate to the weather. Nothing special is required.
